The Daytona 500ís first-ever pace truck will be a new Chevrolet Silverado

Landmark lap vehicle to be driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. at 'Great American Race' in February
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dale Earnhardt Jr., a two-time Daytona 500 winner, will drive the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pace truck to lead the field to green for the 61st running of The Great American Race. This is the first time the Daytona 500 will be paced by a pickup truck. The Silverado pace truck is powered by a production 6.2L V-8 engine that delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

For the first time in the history of the Daytona 500, the pace vehicle will be a truck instead of a traditional car, and the truck to do the honours will be a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.

The pace car for Daytona 500 races of years past have typically been Camaros or Corvettes, but Chevy has decided to try on a different bowtie this year and sticker-up what could be described as the largest pace vehicle to grace the track.

The decision comes as Chevrolet looks to market their pickup amongst a shrinking product lineup. The last Daytona 500 saw an audience of 12 million people, and we’re sure Chevrolet would love for the Silverado to be the first thing they see on the track.

Although the truck isn’t particularly sporty, it still features a 6.2-litre V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which is almost as much as the Camaro makes. The truck will be driven by two-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“I’ve driven Chevy trucks all my life and I’m excited to have this unique experience of pacing the Daytona 500 with the Silverado,” the veteran racer said.

“The Great American Race” celebrates its 61st anniversary in 2019, and will take place on Sunday, February 17.

North America's fascination with trucks has finally made its way into motorsports. Will admit that it does look pretty good with the decals and I expect its more than capable with the 6.2l. Should make for a good marketing piece.

I know that this is just a rendering but does this model look a good bit wider than the regular Silverado? Wonder if they are giving it some sort of widebody kit?

Great way to get some more eyeballs on the new Silverado, especially with the lack of packages that Ford, Toyota and Nissan have taken advantage of over the years.

To me this looks like an artists rendering, so it may not be entirely accurate with dimensions. I know sales for the new Silverado have been fairly slow to start, so this should help to give the new MY the attention it needs.

As much as I like this campaign, offering attractive packages are where its at. Even if the package is no more than an upfit.

All GM has to do is look at the new RAM 1500, addition of the Rebel trim was the greatest move RAM made.

They could always consider an upfit ZR2 package for the Silverado. I know there are some blogs that have already stated the Bison to be a better rock crawler than the Raptor.

I would love to see that Bison package on the Silverado. Already the RST package won me over. Time for Chevy to take the next step

For anyone that hasn't seen it:
