Chevy previews Silverados new "Durabed"

For those who may not know, the 2019 Silverado will have the best in class cargo volume, box depth and box length. Both the short and long box have been increased by more than 10 cubic feet. The bed floor is constructed out of high strength steel, which is rated at 500MPa, over the 340 MPa in the outgoing model. Here's a breakdown of the different cargo volumes amongst rivals and a short overview video.

They really have maximized the space in these new boxes. But to be honest, I think its box length that the most important dimension, and in that regard its still pretty similar to rivals.

I still think they should have gone with an aluminum bed and with GMC going Carbon Fiber you'd think that Chevy would do something to lighten up the rear.

I think it would've been quite the challenge to cut weight on such a large bed, without it raising production costs. I'm not sure on the volume of Rams new Ramboxes, but those seem to add quite a lot of storage space to the bed as well.

We'll have to see if GMC's new CarbonPro box is really as durable as they claim. I think overall it saved them about 62 pounds, not sure how much of a difference that will make with fuel economy. I do think the six way tailgate is a little much, and I'm expecting that we'll see some recalls with it.

If this was 10 years ago when pick-up's didnt't attract as may would be SUV buyers then I would agree but as the pick-up buyer demographic changes so does the product.

Now the bed is just as easy to use as the cabin, no limits regardless of who's interested

There are also going to be risks when you implement brand new features into a model. But in an effort to stay competitive and offer something unique over your rivals, it's an investment worth making. Even if this new tailgate does result in some recalls, as long as Chevy addresses them quickly, it wont deter interest in the truck.
